Several European collaborative projects and other European initiatives of relevance for the solid biomass value chain are going on. Bellow a list including the existing collaboration with EuroPruning.

S2BIOM - Delivery of sustainable supply of non-food biomass to support a “resource-efficient” bioeconomy in Europe

The main aim of this project is to support the development of sustainable logistics for non-food biomass feedstock at local, regional and pan European level, through developing strategies and roadmaps that will be informed by a “computerized and easy to use” toolset with updated harmonized datasets for EU27, western Balkans, Turkey and Ukraine.
The final goal of S2BIOM is to meet the Europe 2020 strategy for the building of a bioeconomy, as well as the targets for deployment of renewable energies and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Connection to EuroPruning
Feedback from EuroPruning will partially support S2Biom databases and serve for validation of tools. Aragón Region will serve as case study to apply the results of S2Biom project. Strategies, roadmaps and tools will be facilitated to public and private stakeholders.

Vineyards4Heat - Vineyards to reduce the CO2 footprint: a sustainable strategy to provide heat and cold to cellars with biomass generated in the territory

The aim is to promote the use of leftover biomass from vine pruning of the Penedès to generate decentralized bioenergy, by reducing CO2 emissions, bringing down energy bills and creating work places. Thus, this project should contribute to laying the bases for managing and financing of biomass resource helping to meet the objectives of the strategy 20-20-20. It is, therefore, a local strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change while allowing businesses of wine and cava sector to be more competitive by helping to achieve a more competitive economic area: low in carbon emissions and high in added value to the territory of the DO Penedès.

Collaboration in dissemination activities. EuroPruning will serve vineyard pruning in form of bales, as wellas wood chips from fruit tree up-rooted plantations, and so, participating Vineyards4Heat in EuroPruning Spanish demos as a final validator of the logistic chain. EuroPruning will provide feedback on the best current innovative technologies for harvesting vineyard prunings. Vineyards4Heat will serve as case study of an existing pruning biomass chain for the assessment of exploitation plans and business models in EuroPruning.

SUCELLOG - Triggering the creation of biomass logistic centres by the agro-industry

SUCELLOG concept promotes using equipment, facilities and man force of agro-industries in their idle periods to handle and pre-treat local agricultural residues with the aim to produce solid biomass. Generated solid biomass can be used to cover the heat demand from their own processes or it can be introduced into the local fuel market. Becoming a logistic centre in addition to the usual activity of the agro-industry, increases their competitiveness by opening new markets, prolonging their operational periods and retaining employees in their idle periods.

Connection to EuroPruning
SUCELLOG concept can also be promoted when dealing with permanent crop prunings. This type of biomass can also be treated in the agro-industry facilities and with their current equipment to upgrade their quality.

UP_RUNNING - Take-off for sustainable supply of woody biomass from agrarian pruning and plantation removal

uP_running project aims to unlock the European potential of woody biomass residues, obtained from vineyards, olive groves and fruit tree plantations, produced by Agrarian Pruning and Plantation Removals (APPR) and to promote its sustainable use as energy feedstock.

Connection to EuroPruning
EuroPruning has been the seed that has made possible the establishment of uP_running. The latter is based in the developments of EuroPruning, taking advantage of the national analysis of pruning use in different countries, the EuroPruning policy recommendations, and the demo experiences and success cases.
