Aragón Region

Selected site is Zaragoza in North-East Spain (41.63 N, 0.88 W). It is a location with Mediterranean dry climate typical of inlands in Spain. Average rainfall is 340 mm and average year temperatures 14.8 ºC. Zaragoza is placed in the Ebro valley. Even though its climate is semi-arid, the main rivers in the Ebro basin provide sufficient resources to account with important surfaces of irrigated crops. Climate becomes more humid and cool in northern and southern areas because of the influence of mountains.

Due to the diversity of conditions almost any type off permanent crop can be found nearby Zaragoza: vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees (apple, pear, peach, apricot, cherry, plum) and dry fruit trees (mainly almond).

Demo scope

The case of varied crop types is typical along Mediterranean areas in Europe. Therefore the demonstration in Zaragoza has focused to incorporate biomass from different crop types. In this way two main objectives will be achieved: the demonstration of the machinery working with different crop lay-outs and with different types of residues.

Among the different possible logistic configurations, the Spanish demo activities will be performed by the following actors:

Pruning Harvesting Chipping Baling Load and transport to storage Open air storage Load and transport to delivery Verification of delivered biomass
Cooperatives Logistic operator Intermediary Logistic operator Biomass power station
Alfalfa dehydration facility
Cement kiln
